Construction

The writing desk is made of mahogany, with a cedar lining. It has brass mounts and inset handles, and it is these features that characterise it clearly as a 'campaign' or travelling piece of furniture.

The desk opens diagonally to form a sloped writing surface and is inlaid with green baize [felt]. The compact design of the desk includes numerous brass fittings and wooden receptacles, containers, false panels, detachable lids, and hidden compartments for the storage of items and writing implements. On the reverse side of the wooden compartment cover there are black-coloured cross-threaded cord ties for holding letters and small documents. The desk includes external and internal locks for securing the contents and provision was made for writing at night with the inclusion of two detachable brass candle holders, one of which has a removeable sconce, whilst the other rim appears to be missing.
