NEALE, John (1797-1875)
Guide to Macquarie.
Born in Sydney on 19 October 1797. Eldest son of William Neale (c.1764 -1840) who served in the 102nd Regiment 1794 -1810 and Sarah Townsend (c.1773 - ) who was convicted of highway robbery in 1793; both parents arrived in Sydney on board the Surprize in 1794.

NIGHTINGALL, Sir Miles (1768-1829)
Army officer.
Served extensively in the West Indies, India, Portugal, Spain and the East Indies. Appointed Governor and Commander-in-Chief of NSW in 1809, but declined on the grounds of ill-health. Knighted on 4 January 1815. Lachlan Macquarie succeeded to the position of governor in 1809 through Nightingall's reluctance to accept the appointment in NSW.
Died: 12 September 1829 at Gloucester [aged sixty-one].
