March

Mar: 10.
Saturday! — I this day wrote to my Broyr. Charles, enclosing him a Copy of my Correspondence with Colonel Clinton Military Secretary to the Duke of York, on the subject of the Orders lately issued for my Nephew Lieut. Hector Mc.Quarie, on the Half Pay of the 40th., and my Cousin Lieut. Jno. Maclaine on the Half Pay of the 9th. Regt. of foot, joining the Corps they have recently been appointed to on Full-Pay; and of the Duke's intention to supersede them in case they do not join in two months from the date of their being put upon Full Pay. — This is impossible - as they are both still much too young to join any Corps; and I have in vain endeavoured to save them their Commissions!

Mar: 11.
Sunday! — I Paid a visit this forenoon to Col: and Miss Cook at Caroline Mount.

Mar: 12.
Monday! — I wrote by this day's Post to my Uncle Lochbuy, enclosing Copy of my Correspondence with Colonel Clinton, respecting his (Lochbuy's) son John - and my own young Nephew Hector - and apprized him of the probability of their losing their Commissions.

Mar: 13.
Tuesday! — I this day recommended and gave in the name of Alexr. Fraser, the son of Mr. Fraser Minister of Torosay in Mull (at the request of my good Uncle Lochbuy who wishes to provide for this Lad), to my Friend General Baird; who has most kindly promised to get him an Ensigncy as soon as he can in the 54th Regt., of which he is himself the Colonel! —

Mar: 17.
Saturday! — I wrote again today to my Uncle Lochbuy about the two Boys, and approved of his writing himself to the Duke of York respecting them; tho' I had now not the least hope of being able to prevent their being Superseded. —

I likewise wrote by this Day's Post to my Sister Mrs. Morley, advising her to remain in Scotland till I went down thither to see my own Family in Mull, which I hoped to be able to obtain Leave to do about the latter end of May - or early in June next - and that I would bring her upon my return. —

Mar: 24.
Saturday! — General Baird and myself dined this day with The Earl and Countess of Breadalbane at their Elegant House in Park Lane en famille; Miss Gavin, the Countess's Sister, being the only addition to the Party. — The General and myself accompanied Lord and Lady Breadalbane to their own Box at the Opera in the Evening; and while there Her Ladyship was so obliging as to present Genl. Baird & myself with opera Tickets of admission to her Box during the remainder of the present Season! — This is indeed a very kind and flattering mark of attention. —

Mar: 28.
Wednesday! — My Sister in law Mrs. Scott, her son Alexander, and myself, went out this forenoon to dine and spend the Day with Col: and Miss Cook at Caroline Mount. — We found the old Gentleman and his amiable Daughter both much improved in their health and Spirits, and we spent a very pleasant day with them. —
