Living Seawalls wins 2025 Eureka Prize
Living Seawalls wins 2025 Eureka Prize for environmental research, a collaboration by Macquarie, UNSW and Sydney Institute of Marine Science.

The Eureka Prizes are Australia’s most comprehensive national science awards, celebrating excellence across research, innovation, leadership, and science engagement. This year, the Living Seawalls project stood out for its groundbreaking work in eco-engineering marine infrastructure to enhance biodiversity and climate resilience.
Led by Professor Melanie Bishop and Honorary Professor Katherine Dafforn, Dr Aria Lee, Dr Mariana Mayer Pinto, and Dr Maria Vozzo, the team developed modular structures that mimic natural shoreline features. These modules, installed in Sydney Harbour, attracted 115 marine species – a remarkable 20 per cent increase compared to traditional seawalls.
Congratulations to the entire team on this well-deserved recognition.
