Living Seawalls named 2025 Eureka Prize finalists

Living Seawalls team are finalists for the 2025 Eureka Prize for Environmental Research, one of Australia’s most prestigious science awards.

Living seawalls team

Led by researchers Professor Melanie Bishop and Honorary Professor Katherine Dafforn, the Living Seawalls project is transforming how we think about marine infrastructure. By retrofitting seawalls with habitat-enhancing modules that mimic natural shoreline features, the team has created thriving ecosystems in urban marine environments.

In Sydney Harbour, these eco-engineered seawalls have attracted 115 species – a 20 per cent increase compared to traditional seawalls.

The Eureka Prizes celebrate excellence in research, innovation, leadership, and science engagement. Winners will be announced at a gala ceremony on 3 September 2025 at the Australin Museum.
