Dr Anthony Waddle named 2025 Pritzker finalist
UCLA has named Dr Anthony Waddle among three global finalists for the 2025 Pritzker Emerging Environmental Genius Award.

Dr Anthony Waddle, a Schmidt Science Fellow at Macquarie University, has been internationally recognised for his groundbreaking work in amphibian conservation. His innovative research has played a pivotal role in the recovery of Australia’s green and golden bell frog, a species once on the brink of extinction due to the devastating chytrid fungus, a lethal pathogen.
Through a combination of captive breeding, vaccination trials, and the development of frog saunas – microhabitats that help amphibians fight off fungal infections – Anthony’s efforts have led to a dramatic increase in survival rates and breeding success. In partnership with the New South Wales government and local conservation groups, his work has helped the bell frog population nearly triple in recent years.
The Pritzker Award, which includes a $100,000 prize, celebrates emerging leaders whose work overcomes environmental challenges through innovation. Anthony’s selection from a global pool of 13 nominees is a testament to his contributions to biodiversity conservation in wildlife.
The winner will be announced at a ceremony on October 8 at UCLA.
