Faculty of Science and Engineering staff were deeply involved in National Science Week from 12 August to 20 August, 2023.

Highlights from the Science Week 2023 included:

  • FAAB Opens Up: The Industrial Transformation Training Centre (ITTC) for Facilitated Advancement of Australia's Bioactives (FAAB) funded by the Australian Research Council to transform the bioactive ingredients sector hosted an Open Day stall with a team of 12 volunteers, with activities focused on the gut microbiome and bioactives from viticulture waste, featuring a sorting game and a spinning wheel quiz on gut health.
  • Science in the Scrub: Joanne Jamie/NatSci presented an event at the Lizard Log Amphitheatre, Abbotsbury, focusing on engaging the public with science on 14/08/23 from 11am to 3pm.
  • Climate Solutions You Wish You Knew About: Professor Michelle Leishman/NatSci gave a talk at The Calyx, Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, on 15/08/23 at 6pm discussing climate solutions.
  • An Introduction to Observing the Night Sky: Dr. Angel R. Lopez-Sanchez/MAPS hosted a session at Mosman Library Service on 16/08/23 from 7pm to 8pm about night sky observation.

  • Remediate: Test out a new card game at the pub: Several scientists including Edward Archer and Pamela Tsoumbris tested a new card game at the Royal Hotel Darlington on 18/08/23 from 6pm to 8pm.
  • Sydney Science Trail: Hosted at the Australian Museum from 14/08/23 to 18/08/23, providing a trail of scientific activities.
  • Family Science Day: Fatemeh Salehi/SoE and others hosted a family science event at Parramatta Square and PHIVE on 19/08/23 from 10am to 3pm.
  • Indigenous Science Experience Community Day at Redfern: Joanne Jamie/NatSci and Fatemeh Salehi/SoE hosted an event at Redfern on 20/08/23 from 10am to 3pm focusing on Indigenous science.

NISEP 2023

  • Science in the Swamp - Sunday 20 August 2023: Coordinated by Lindsay Parker and others, this event took place at Centennial Parklands on 20/08/23 from 11am to 3pm.
  • National Science Quiz: Paige Erpf/ASB organized a quiz at The Capitol Melbourne and online on 27/08/23 at 3:30pm.
  • Getting to Know Your Friendly Neighbourhood Microbiologist: An online event hosted by The Joint Academic Microbiology Seminars (JAMS) Organisation from 15-23 August at 12pm.
  • Science in the Scrub: Meet the Fall Army Worm: Dr. Vivian Mendez Alvarez, Dr. Meena Thakur, and Dr. Fazila Yousuf (ABS) participated in events at Woollahra Library and Family Science Day at Parramatta on 12 & 19 August 2023 from 11am to 3pm.
