This week, Faculty of Science and Engineering researcher Professor Neil Saintilan has been awarded the 2026 Mawson Medal by the Australian Academy of Science, a prestigious Australian award that honours those in the Earth sciences.

A global leader in coastal wetland research, Professor Saintilan has spent his career advancing our understanding of how coastal ecosystems adapt to sea-level rise and climate change.
His work has had an impact on national environmental policy, including providing scientific expertise to the $8 billion Murray–Darling Basin water reform.
"I'm deeply honoured to receive this award," Professor Saintilan said. "Coastal wetlands are critical to how we respond to climate change, and I hope this recognition helps reinforce the importance of protecting and restoring these ecosystems worldwide.”The Mawson Medal recognises outstanding research in the Earth sciences and is named in honour of Sir Douglas Mawson FAA FRS, geologist and Antarctic explorer.Congratulations, Professor Saintilan, on this recognition.
