We believe every voice matters in healthcare research

With respectful community engagement and co-design at the heart of high-quality research, we collaborate with people from diverse backgrounds to ensure our work reflects real-world healthcare experiences.

At the Australian Institute of Health Innovation (AIHI), we are deeply committed to embedding community voices into every stage of our research. Through respectful engagement and co-design, we work alongside people with lived experience of the health system – spanning geographic, demographic and cultural diversity – to ensure our research is relevant, inclusive and impactful.

Our community engagement

We are especially grateful to the members of our AIHI Community Engagement Panel, who provide invaluable insights from idea generation through to design, implementation and evaluation. Their contributions have already shaped projects on:

  • artificial intelligence in detecting brain tumours and delirium
  • climate change and health
  • improving wait times in emergency departments
  • rural health services.

Our AIHI Aged Care Consumer Panel plays a vital role in guiding research aimed at enhancing aged care safety and quality, with a particular focus on safe medication use and overall wellbeing.

In the Listen to Me project, people with intellectual disability and their families have been involved from the outset, helping to shape the initiative from its earliest stages. Recognising the communication barriers faced in hospital settings, the project is developing resources to support more inclusive care.

We also acknowledge the contributions of our Indigenous coordinator and community focus groups who are actively involved in making hospital emergency departments safer.

Meanwhile, the CanEngage project – recipient of the 2023 NSW Premier’s Cancer Research Award for Improving Equitable Outcomes – demonstrates the power of co-production and multicultural consumer co-facilitation in cancer care research.
