Supporting short-term study in Taiwan

Funded by the Australia Taiwan Culture Foundation, the grant aims to deepen students’ understanding of Taiwan’s culture, society, politics and language, and to foster long-term people-to-people ties between Australia and Taiwan.

Each year, from 2024 to 2028, two grants of AUD $3500 will be awarded to support participation in Taiwan-based language and culture programs or relevant academic courses.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • bee enrolled in an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in the Faculty of Arts at Macquarie University
  • be accepted into, or in the process of applying for, a short-term study program in Taiwan related to language (Mandarin or Taiwanese), culture, politics, society, or related fields
  • demonstrate an interest in Australia–Taiwan relations or a career with an international or intercultural focus.

Application documents

Applicants are required to submit the following materials:

  • Statement of purpose (300–500 words): a personal statement outlining:
    • your motivation for studying in Taiwan
    • any relevant experience or coursework related to Taiwan
    • how the program fits with your academic or career goals
    • how you hope to promote Australia–Taiwan understanding
    • any financial challenges the grant would help address.
  • Proof of enrolment in Taiwan-related study: documentation showing current or intended enrolment in Taiwan-focused language, cultural, or area studies at a host institution in Taiwan.
  • Evidence of academic merit: a current academic transcript or other evidence demonstrating strong academic performance.
  • Evidence of engagement potential: any materials that demonstrate cultural curiosity, initiative, or past engagement with Taiwanese or broader East Asian communities (eg volunteer work, projects, event participation).
  • Referee statement (optional): a short academic or professional reference supporting your application (maximum one page).

Conditions of award

  • Grant recipients are expected to participate in a post-program reflection session.
  • Recipients may be invited to share their experience at Macquarie events or via a short written or visual summary.

Applications will be assessed on a rolling basis.

Receiving the grant was an invaluable opportunity that greatly enhanced my academic journey while studying in Taiwan. I was able to not only practice my Chinese in real-world settings but also connect with Taiwan’s cultural heritage. This combination of language learning and cultural immersion created a more holistic and meaningful experience.
