Travel overseas to further your study

The John Campbell Travelling Scholarship is to enable Macquarie University students to study issues related to world federalism, pursue a related research project or undertake a related internship internationally.

One scholarship per year will be awarded at an amount of $5000.

Areas of study

The successful candidate will be able to travel internationally to pursue one, or a combination of more than one, of the following:

  • Participation in an international course of study on world federalism.
  • Convening of an international conference on world federalism.
  • Delivery of a major presentation at an international conference on world federalism.

Or a research project in a related area.

A related area is one in which federal principles are examined in terms of the challenges of global governance. The priority areas of the World Federalist Movement-Institute for Global Policy provide some relevant guidance. These are:

  • the creation and strengthening of international institutions or cooperation to address international challenges
  • federalism and global governance including international federalism, regional federalism and promoting federalism
  • peace and conflict prevention including Coalition for the International Criminal Court and Universal Jurisdiction
  • international democracy
  • economic governance including reform of international financial organisations, global levies or taxes, addressing expenditures on militarisation and corporate accountability
  • environmental governance including World Environment Organisation, World Summit on Sustainable Development, Global Convention on Rio Principle 10 and UN Commission on Sustainable Development.

A related area is one in which federal principles are examined in terms of the challenges of global governance. The priority areas of the World Federalist Movement-Institute for Global Policy provide some relevant guidance. These are:

  • any internship organised individually by the applicant to advance world federalist objectives. The internship may be part of a participation and community engagement unit at Macquarie University
  • participation in any World Federalist Movement internships
  • participation in internships with member organisations or associated organisations of the World Federalist Movement – Institute for Global Policy.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • be an Australian or international continuing student at Macquarie University, enrolled full-time
  • be enrolled in Faculty of Arts (FoA) programs, including those undertaking double degrees, provided at least one of their degrees is within a discipline within the School of International Studies (not for semester mobility).

Applicable courses

The scholarship is available for Macquarie University students from a range of disciplines including:

  • criminology
  • international relations
  • international studies
  • politics
  • security studies.

Students may be undergraduate or postgraduate, including recent Macquarie University postdoctoral scholars within five years of the submission of thesis.

Selection criteria and application documents

A decision to award will be made based on the following selection criteria.

For postgraduate MRes and HDR students:

  • applicants curriculum vitae including a full list of awards, prizes and peer-review activity
  • significance of the proposed project or activity
  • feasibility of achieving the project/activity’s stated outcomes
  • importance of the project/activity in enhancing the applicant’s research and scholarship.

For undergraduates and coursework postgraduates:

  • a minimum WAM of 60
  • commitment to and interest in world federalism and global governance.

Application rounds

  • Applications for travel to be undertaken in 2026 are now open and will close COB 7 August 2026.
  • Only one scholarship may be awarded in a year in which there are applications of the requisite standard. The selection panel reserves the right to not award a scholarship in a year in which applications are not of the requisite standard
