Promoting engagement with the Macedonian region

The Macedonian Studies Foundation Travel Grants support Macquarie University staff and students undertaking travel to Macedonia as part of their project.

These grants are funded by the Macedonian Studies Foundation and provide:

  • student travel grant of $5000
  • staff travel grant of $3000.

Preference will be given to applicants travelling to Macedonia, followed by lesser studied areas in the region such as:

  • Bulgaria
  • Romania
  • Hungary
  • Croatia.

The successful staff member and student will be required to provide a report of their trip upon completion.

Eligibility

Student applicants must:

  • be a commencing or continuing student at Macquarie University (domestic or international, full time or part time)
  • be enrolled in a Faculty of Arts program, including double degrees, where at least one degree is offered by the School of International Studies
  • be an HDR student in the School of International Studies (if applicable)
  • have completed at least one semester of study with a minimum WAM of 60 if applying as a continuing student
  • be undertaking travel to Macedonia as part of your project, or to a preferred region (Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary or Croatia).

Staff applicants must:

  • be a permanent staff member of the School of International Studies
  • have successfully completed your probationary period
  • have received performance sign off from your Discipline Chair (or equivalent supervisor)
  • be undertaking travel to Macedonia as part of your project, or to a preferred region (Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary or Croatia).

Selection criteria and application documents

Student applicants are required to submit the following materials:

  • current academic transcript or other evidence demonstrating academic performance
  • summary of academic achievements, including current WAM and any relevant academic awards or recognitions
  • personal statement responses addressing the required questions:
    • explain why you have chosen your specific university and destination (500-1000 words)
    • outline what your activities are and how they support your degree (500-1000 words)
    • explain how you plan to further your knowledge of the region during the travel and serve as a bridge between the area and Australia (500-1000 words).

Staff applicants are required to submit the following materials:

  • curriculum vitae including a full list of awards, prizes and peer review activity
  • personal statement responses addressing the required questions:
    • explain details of the proposed travel, including location, length and activities (500-1000 words)
    • outline outputs linked to the travel (500-1000 words)
    • highlight how the trip will improve connections between Macquarie and the region (500-1000 words).

Application rounds

  • Application are now open for 2026 and will close COB Friday 7 August.
  • Students can apply for the grant retrospectively for travel undertaken in 2026.
