The School of International Studies hosted a lecture on 'Tech against terrorism', highlighting research and partnership opportunities.

Tech against terrorism lecture

The School of International Studies hosted its fifth special lecture of 2025, featuring a presentation by Tech Against Terrorism (TAT), an independent, not-for-profit initiative supported by the United Nations Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED), which addresses the terrorist use of the internet while upholding human rights. The session drew strong interest, with around 80 students and staff in attendance.

Threat Intelligence Analysts Anna Grierson and Laura Cairns, representing TAT's Australian team (with headquarters based in London), provided an overview of OSINT (open-source intelligence) in practice and discussed the challenges of countering terrorist use of online platforms. They also explored the role of AI and emerging technologies in shaping both threats and responses.

The lecture provided valuable insights into current challenges in counterterrorism and security, and highlighted significant opportunities for future collaboration between TAT and Macquarie University researchers in terrorism and security studies. It further underscored the academic and industry relevance of research in this field, strengthening the School of International Studies' commitment to building partnerships that address critical global security challenges.
