Celebrating the annual Greek certificate awards

The School of International Studies celebrated World Greek Language Day 2026 by recognising recipients of the Certificate of Attainment in Greek.

The Greek Language Examination Centre of Macquarie University's School of International Studies, the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, hosted its annual Certificate of Attainment in the Greek language awards ceremony at Macquarie University's Arts Precinct.

The celebration coincided with World Greek Language Day 2026, adding special significance to the event. This ceremony is a major highlight of our university's engagement with diverse cultural traditions.

Over 200 attendees, including successful candidates and their families, school principals, Greek language teachers, community representatives and media, joined the event. The ceremony featured distinguished guests, including His Grace Bishop Christodoulos of Magnesia, representing His Eminence Archbishop Makarios.

Other notable attendees included:

  • Mr George Skemperis, Consul General of Greece in Sydney
  • Dr Julie Lim, Lecturer and Advisory Board Member in Multicultural New South Wales, representing the Honourable Stephen Kamper, Minister for Multiculturalism
  • Dr Wes Robertson, Senior Lecturer and Chair of Global Cultures & Languages
  • Dr Jasna Novak Milic, Senior Lecturer and Director of Engagement and Outreach (Schools and Alumni) at the School of International Studies
  • Dr Patricia Koromvokis, Senior Lecturer in Global Studies and Head of the Greek Language Examination Centre at Macquarie University.

The ceremony was further honoured by a written message from Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Dr Wes Robertson congratulated the recipients and praised their parents, highlighting this significant educational milestone.

The Honourable Sophie Cotsis MP, Minister for Industrial Relations NSW and a proud Macquarie University alumna, addressed attendees via video. She remarked: "This internationally recognised qualification is a testament to your hard work. I congratulate Macquarie University for being the largest Greek language examination centre in the Southern Hemisphere."

Through its enduring partnership with the Greek Australian Society, the School of International Studies continues its vital work of supporting Hellenic language and culture.

The Certificate of Attainment in Greek Language is globally recognised, demonstrating Greek language proficiency and serving as a prerequisite for various professions internationally.
