Research and funding opportunities
ACANS is one of the few university-based institutions in the world that offers facilities and financial support for the study of numismatics. We offer research, volunteering, internship, fellowship and supervision opportunities.
Junior fellowship
Period: Fellows are expected to be active at the centre for a minimum period of around 12 weeks.
Value: Two fellowships are available annually, each with a value of approximately $4000 AUD.
The ACANS Junior Research Fellowship encourages postgraduate students to undertake research into a numismatics topic aligned with their interests and studies using the ACANS facilities and collections.
The Junior Research Fellowship is open to students who:
- hold a bachelor degree in ancient history, archaeology, classical languages or a related field
- are currently enrolled in a postgraduate degree at an Australian or New Zealand tertiary institution.
Junior Research Fellows are expected to spend approximately 100 hours working at ACANS over the course of their Fellowship. During this time, Junior Research Fellows:
- participate in a seminar series on numismatics organized by the director of ACANS
- undertake an approved numismatic research project related to their higher degree research
- present the results of their ACANS project at a seminar or research lecture
- assist in the work of ACANS by participating in projects assigned by the director.
Applications close on 30 June each year, with fellowships commencing in Session 2 (roughly six weeks after applications close).
Contact the director of ACANS, through the administrative staff within the history and archaeology discipline, if you wish to discuss applying.
ACANS is committed to facilitating the mobility of applicants from interstate and New Zealand institutions, and strongly encourages students from outside of Sydney to apply for this opportunity. At minimum, the Fellowship stipend is intended to cover the cost of travelling to and living on campus during the Fellows’ period of tenure at ACANS.
We also offer a Senior Research Fellowship, by invitation.
John Melville-Jones Prize in Numismatics
Value: $500 AUD
The John Melville-Jones Prize in Numismatics is named in honour of distinguished numismatist and longstanding associate of ACANS, Emeritus Professor John Melville-Jones AM. It is awarded annually for the best essay on a numismatic topic. Two awards may be made. The prize is only open to students (undergraduate or postgraduate) at Macquarie University.
How to apply
Applications close on 31 December each year. Contact the director of ACANS, through the administrative staff within the history and archaeology discipline, to express your interest.
Volunteering and internships
ACANS has a robust community of undergraduate and postgraduate volunteers and interns who assist in the ongoing cataloguing of the centre’s thousands of ancient Greek and Roman coins.
Volunteers and interns are an invaluable part of the ACANS community. Volunteer opportunities offer students with an excellent means of handling and researching ancient artefacts while assisting in the broader program of entering information about the ACANS collection into the university’s collections database (EMu).
