  4. Professor Julian Droogan appointed to the Sydney Peace Foundation Board

Sydney Peace Foundation Board appointment

The Sydney Peace Foundation, established in 1998, has appointed Professor Julian Droogan, Head of the School of International Studies, to its Board.

The Foundation advocates for “peace with justice” and inspires individuals and communities to build a more peaceful and equitable world. It supports change-makers and leaders to further their work, provides a platform to generate government, media and public awareness and hosts Australia’s international prize for peace.

In his role, Professor Droogan will contribute his expertise in countering violent extremism, political violence and contemporary security challenges to support the Foundation’s work in addressing structural inequalities and deep injustices.

“It is a great honour to join the Sydney Peace Foundation Board and contribute to its mission of advancing peace,” says Professor Droogan.

“At a time when inequality, conflict and misinformation is prevalent in many corners of the globe, the Foundation’s work in promoting dialogue, understanding and change is more important than ever.”

Professor Droogan highlights the important connection between the Sydney Peace Foundation’s mission and the research and engagement focus of Macquarie’s School of International Studies.

“Both the Foundation and the School share a commitment to addressing global challenges through collaborative, evidence-based approaches. I look forward to the opportunities for shared learning and meaningful engagement across research, with our students, and through public dialogue.”

Each year, the Sydney Peace Prize honours global changemakers for significant contributions to peace, justice and non-violence. This year, the prize will be awarded to Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, distinguished international jurist and lifelong advocate for justice. Judge Pillay is recognised for her unwavering commitment to defending fundamental human rights, promoting peace with justice and championing the rights of women and marginalised communities.

The 2025 Sydney Peace Prize lecture and award ceremony will be held on Thursday 6 November.
