Historical moments inform our present and future

Our scholars work to explain urgent issues of our time. We do this by exploring the pasts that led to the present, as well as by analysing the operations of power today.

The Department of Modern History, Politics and International Relations is a research-focused department with a reputation for teaching excellence.

In Politics and International Relations we specialise in Australian, US, African and Middle Eastern Politics. We encourage our students to think about politics in diverse ways, an approach that combines insights from history, sociology, law, anthropology, and economics.

In Modern History, our staff specialise particularly in the histories of gender, the family, sexuality, sport and leisure, ideas, war and peace. Our geographical range covers Australasia, the Pacific world, Europe, and North America.
