Macquarie University was recognised as ‘above world standard’ for Media and Communications Studies in the 2016-18 Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) ratings, Australia’s national research evaluation framework.

This research area specialises in:

  • race and whiteness studies
  • bioculture: the imbrication of media, technology, and culture.

Both strands use and apply poststructuralist theory, media and cultural theory, and race and whiteness theory to promote and advocate for social justice and ethical perspectives  in the interpretation of contemporary cultural and political events.

This area of research includes: music, sound, performance, dance, and theatre studies, documentary film-making, and the creative and art industries.
