Unlock a new cultural world

The Polish language has a rich cultural tradition dating back many centuries. Poland is a significant player in the global economy, further generating demand for Polish language skills.

Polish is the national language of Poland. It belongs to the Slavonic group of languages, along with Czech, Slovak, Croatian, Bulgarian and Russian.

I don't like work ... but I like what is in work – the chance to find yourself. Your own reality – for yourself, not for others.

– Joseph Conrad

Our levels of study

Polish is offered by distance education. The study program commences at introductory level progressing through to advanced level (Common European Framework of Reference level A1 to C1). It adopts an interdisciplinary approach to the study of linguistics, literature, culture, history and art.

You can enrol in our undergraduate classes or undertake research as part of an MRes or PhD.

Polish is offered as a major or an elective in a degree program. A Diploma of Languages can be completed alongside a degree or by students who've previously completed a degree. Students with prior Polish language skills (including Polish HSC) may commence their studies at a higher level. Selected Polish units are available for non-award study.

What you’ll learn

Polish Studies equips students with knowledge of the Polish language and a broader set of skills in reading, writing and textual analysis, as well as academic research into language, literature, history and art in the Polish cultural context. Polish Studies also provides a unique opportunity for qualifying students to study overseas at a partner university, the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Poland.

Polish graduation

"My studies mark the beginning of a new way of seeing, living and engaging with the world that is full of beauty and rich in life lessons. I have also deepened my critical thinking skills, which I can apply productively in my legal work."

Miss Anne Marie Lindsay Lopez Graduate, Diploma of Languages (Polish)
