Supporting research enhanced by experience

Each year Macquarie’s Department of History and Archaeology offers a number of competitive scholarships and fellowships to support our higher degree and early career researchers.

These enable our higher degree and early career research student community to travel and pursue research opportunities in various fields, while also enhancing the research profile and output of our Department.

Eligible recipients include MRes, Mphil and PhD students, plus recent PhD graduates.  Undergraduates and other students of history, archaeology and ancient languages may also, in some cases, be eligible.

Please note that some of these scholarships may have specific conditions.

2023 ACANS (Australian Centre for Ancient Numismatic Studies) Junior Research Fellowships

In addition, ACANS is offering two Junior Research Fellowships.  The closing date for applications for these fellowships is 12.00 midnight, Saturday 1 July 2023.

In memory of the late Mrs Michelle McLean, and thanks to the generosity of Mr Cameron McLean, the Department of History and Archaeology at Macquarie University is offering a scholarship to enable a student to undertake travel overseas to pursue a program of study or research with the aim of advancing the study of Egyptology.

Eligibility: Available to Graduate Research and postgraduate students (MRes, Mphil or PhD) studying Ancient History or Archaeology at Macquarie University, or to recent Macquarie University Ancient History or Archaeology postdoctoral scholars or Masters graduates, within three years of award of their degree.

Purpose: The purpose of the scholarship is to enable a student to undertake travel overseas to pursue a program of study or research with the aim of advancing the study of Egyptology. The successful candidate will be expected to give a public lecture on their return about their overseas study/research project.

Value: Up to A$5,000 contribution towards airfare/accommodation/expenses at the discretion of the Selection Panel.

Time frame: The successful candidate will be eligible to complete their travel within one year of award of the scholarship.

  1. The strength of the applicant's academic record, including academic achievements, awards, prizes, scholarships, grants and peer-review activity.
  2. Projected outcomes, including research output.

  4. The benefit to the applicant’s research of receiving the award.
  5. The benefit to the host institution, the Department of History and Archaeology and to Macquarie University of receiving the award.

Thanks to the generosity of a donor who wishes to remain anonymous, the Department of History and Archaeology at Macquarie University is offering a scholarship to enable a student to support their research costs in a program of study or research with the aim of advancing the study of Egyptology.

Eligibility: Available to Graduate Research and postgraduate students (MRes, Mphil or PhD) studying Ancient History or Archaeology at Macquarie University, or to recent Macquarie University Ancient History or Archaeology postdoctoral scholars or Masters graduates, within three years of award of their degree.

Purpose: The purpose of the scholarship is to enable a student to support research costs associated with their program of study or research with the aim of advancing the study of Egyptology. Research costs may include travel, conference registration, copyright fees for images, publication fees including copyediting, or laboratory fees for scientific analysis. The successful candidate will be expected to give a public lecture on their research project.

Value: Up to A$5,000 contribution towards research costs at the discretion of the Selection Panel.

Time frame: The successful candidate will be eligible to complete their research activity within one year of award of the scholarship.  It is expected that the Scholarship funds will be spent within 12 months of award, and the successful candidates(s) will provide a report on the outcomes within one year of the award of the Scholarship.

Thanks to the generosity of Mrs Janet Gale and the late Dr Bill Gale, the Department of History and Archaeology at Macquarie University is offering a scholarship to the British School at Rome for up to six months starting from October 2023

Eligibility: Available to Graduate Research and postgraduate students (MRes, Mphil or PhD) studying Ancient History or Archaeology at Macquarie University, or to recent Macquarie University Ancient History or Archaeology postdoctoral scholars, within three years of award of their degree.

Purpose: The successful candidate, while at the British School at Rome, will undertake a research project relevant to the history and archaeology of Rome, Italy or the provinces of the Roman Empire. They will achieve this through interaction with the resources and community of the British School at Rome.

Value:

  • one return economy airfare from Australia to Rome
  • cost of residence in the British School at Rome (obligatory).

Time frame: The successful candidate will be eligible to complete their travel within one year of award of the scholarship.

Eligibility: Available to Graduate Research and postgraduate students (MRes, Mphil or PhD) studying Ancient History or Archaeology at Macquarie University, or to recent Macquarie University Ancient History or Archaeology postdoctoral scholars, within three years of award of their degree.

Purpose:The successful candidate will be able to achieve specific research and publication outcomes in the field of Graeco-Roman History through accessing international resources.

Value: Up to A$5,000 contribution towards airfare/accommodation/expenses at the discretion of the Selection Panel.

Time frame: The successful candidate will be eligible to complete their travel within one year of award of the scholarship.

Through the generosity of Tyndale House (Cambridge) and a donor from the Society for the Study of Early Christianity (SSEC), the Department of History and Archaeology at Macquarie University is offering a travelling scholarship for four weeks to Tyndale House, Cambridge in January/February 2023.

Eligibility: Available to Graduate Research and postgraduate students (MRes, Mphil or PhD) studying Ancient History or Archaeology at Macquarie University, or to recent Macquarie University Ancient History or Archaeology postdoctoral scholars, within three years of award of their degree.

Purpose: The successful candidate will be expected to benefit from and contribute to the international community of scholars at Tyndale House in line with the ethos and expectations of that organisation (please consult the Tyndale House website).

Value:

  • AU$1,500 towards one return airfare from Australia to London.
  • Four weeks' accommodation and use of the Library at Tyndale House.

Time frame: The successful candidate will be eligible to complete their travel within one year of award of the scholarship.

  5. The benefit to the host institution, the Department of History and Archaeology and to Macquarie University of receiving the award.

Through the generosity of The Queen’s Club, Sydney, the Department of History and Archaeology at Macquarie University is offering two awards of $2500 to help Early Career Researchers publish their PhD theses.

Eligibility: Available to recent PhD graduates from the Department of History and Archaeology at Macquarie University, within three years of award of their degree.

Purpose: The successful candidates will be expected to use their award to contribute towards publishing their theses. They will be expected to give a lecture at the Queen’s Club on the topic of their thesis.

Value: Two awards of AU$2,500 towards the cost of thesis publication.

Time frame: The successful candidates will be required to give a lecture at the Queens Club within a year of receiving the award, and would be expected to publish their theses within two years of the receipt of the award.

  1. The strength of the applicant's academic record, including academic achievements, awards, prizes, scholarships, grants and peer-review activity.
  2. Project plan for publishing the thesis, including the proposed publisher.
  3. The feasibility of achieving publication.
  4. The preparation of a budget.

Selection panel

The applications will be considered by a panel consisting of:

  • a member of the Ancient History and Archaeology staff with academic interests in the area.

These fellowships are available to students who have obtained a BA from any tertiary institution in ancient history, archaeology or classical languages. The fellowships are available to students in Australia and New Zealand.  ACANS is, however, unable to provide supporting funds for travel.

A fellowship can only be held while the candidate is actually enrolled for a higher degree (it does not include those planning to enrol in the future).

The fellowship is intended to assist students to learn about numismatics with a view to developing wider research strategies. Students who obtain the fellowships will be asked to:

  1. participate in a seminar series on numismatics organized by the director of ACANS;
  2. undertake an approved numismatic research project related to your HD research;
  3. present the results of your ACANS project at a seminar or research lecture.
  4. assist in the work of ACANS by participating in projects assigned by the director.

The total number of hours a fellowship student is expected to work at ACANS is approximately 100 (the number is set according to the MQ payment rate for researchers). Unless otherwise arranged the student is expected to complete all hours before the end of the year.

Two Fellowships are offered, each with the value: approx. AUD $4000.
