We welcome opportunities to connect

The Department of English has valuable relationships with other academic institutions, schools, industry partners, and government organisations.

We engage with research and industry partners in order to advance the scope and impact of our undergraduate, postgraduate and research programs; to disseminate our research in public forums; and to engage in relevant literary and cultural conversations and publications.

Academic outreach

Many academic staff are actively involved with the Australia Research Council, serving as peer assessors, and sit on the board of various academic organisations including:

We are interested in developing collaborations in our areas of research specialisation, and Cotutelle opportunities for the supervision of PhD students.

High schools

Our academics engage with high schools through outreach lectures, master classes in literature and creative writing, and we collaborate with WestWords, Western Sydney’s Literature Development Organisation conducting outreach to high school students.

We are particularly interested in developing summer writing programs with high schools.

The Department of English will launch the MQ Student Writers’ Awards and the inaugural MQ Student Writers’ Festival on 20 August 2020. These activities include high school students as well as university students, bringing both cohorts together and giving high school students a taste of university life.

  • The Australian / Vogel’s Literary Award
  • The NSW Premier’s Literary Awards
  • The NSW Premier’s History Prizes
  • The Voss Literary Prize
  • The ASAL Mary Gilmore Award

We are interested in developing creative collaborations with local creative writing organisations to hold literary functions in Macquarie University’s new Arts precinct opening in mid-2020. We particularly welcome opportunities to collaborate with Indigenous writers to hold events celebrating NAIDOC Week. Contact: Associate Professor Hsu-Ming Teo (hsuming.teo@mq.edu.au)

We are also interested in interviewing local, Sydney-based writers for the Department’s weekly podcast, From the Lighthouse. Contact: Dr Stephanie Russo (stephanie.russo@mq.edu.au)

Government organisations

Our creative writing staff have worked as peer assessors for Create NSW and the Australian Council for the Arts. We have collaborated with the State Library of NSW to hold public events.

We welcome opportunities to collaborate with local councils and government organisations in order to serve the literary and cultural interests of the broader community.
