The world's largest Ancient History department

Macquarie University boasts over 30 leading academics, whose knowledge of Ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome and the Near East forms the basis for your studies.

Our department provides training in both Ancient History and in Archaeology, the former has a greater focus on the study of ancient texts, whereas the latter concentrates on the material remains of the past and ancient landscapes. You can choose to study ancient languages, so that you have direct access to the words written by the people of the past (whether in Latin, Greek, Hebrew or Egyptian).

The chronological range covers from the Bronze Age up to the fall of Constantinople (1453). Students in the Department of Ancient History have the opportunity to participate in excavations and field projects overseas, subject to availability, in Croatia, in Greece, in Israel and in Egypt.
