Celebrating their 10th season, the team travelled to Houston, USA with their robot, named Marra Marra. They were able to participate in the international competition thanks to the support of donors via the Macquarie University Ignite crowdfunding platform.

Sarah Heimlich, FIRST Australia volunteer, shared why this experience was so important for the team. “World championships are great because you get to compete with the best of the best. It’s a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn from other competitors, to network globally and to show off Australian innovation.”

FIRST Robotics charges students to design, build, program and compete with their robots. Macquarie University is a major sponsor of FIRST Australia and hosts its annual competition. On the global stage, The Thunder Down Under has previously placed as high as 7th so the 3rd place finish this year was a massive accomplishment.

Next, the team will prepare for the Duel Down Under in July. Then they will begin recruiting and fundraising for next year, with a new robot being built for January 2020.
