A doctor in the making thanks to MD Scholarship
When Gabrielle Sach found out that she had been awarded an alumni-funded MD scholarship, she felt like a weight had been lifted off her shoulders. The joy of being accepted to study a Doctor of Medicine at Macquarie was quickly replaced by financial worries.
“The scholarship has given me financial independence,” says Gabrielle. “I don’t have to rely on my family and worry how to pay them back, and although I still work part-time as a lifeguard and swimming teacher, the pressure has been lifted and I can concentrate on my studies.”
Having always wanted to work in the medical field, but not sure of which area to specialise in, Gabi completed a Bachelor of Clinical Sciences at Macquarie at the end of 2017. She is continually inspired by the courses and the lecturers in the MD program.
“One thing I know for sure is that I want to be a personable and hands-on practitioner,” she said. “I think that the ability to engage with patients with empathy and respect is extremely important. The focus on global learning and cross-cultural understanding in the Macquarie MD Program is one of the things that attracted me to it.”
“I am so grateful to those generous people who see the value in education and donate to scholarships. I hope to be in a position to do the same one day.”
