Ice landscape from Solving Complex Problems specialisation
Big History continues to reach new audiences in the online learning space with a series of new "specialization" courses. Officially launched at a special Learning and Teaching Exchange event in April on campus, the courses are now open to our Big History global community.
The Solving Complex Problems specialization uses the Big History framework to tackle Wicked Problems - complex problems that cross multiple fields, and are resistant to simple solutions. The courses join the successful Big History: Connecting Knowledge Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on the Coursera platform.
Three specialisation courses - Analysing Complexity, Evaluating Problems and Creating Innovation - equip global learners with the skills to succeed in the workforce. The courses are targeted at middle management and executive leaders in both the private and public sector looking to improve their ability to solve complex global problems.
"We are excited to launch Macquarie University's first specialization on the Coursera platform," says Big History Institute Executive Director, Andrew McKenna. "The Solving Complex Problems specialisation provides professionals with the real world skills they need to succeed in their chosen career. Our learners complete the course armed with a powerful global toolkit to address complex problems in a way that has never been done before."
The Solving Complex Problems specialisation was inspired by multiple sessions on Big History at the World Economic Forum in Davos, and the demand for particular skills that became evident through that process.
"The specialization uses the framework of Big History to provide a way to integrate perspectives from multiple disciplines into the processes of Analyzing Complexity, Evaluating Problems, and Creating Innovation," says Mr McKenna.
Over 60 academics from all faculties at Macquarie University have contributed lectures to the MOOC, lending their expertise and individual perspectives to supercharge complex problem solving.
Following the courses recent launch learners have already begun to share their positive feedback.
Here is one learner's experience of the course:
"The course represents a new direction of thought, new knowledge, fresh ideas; it is something what we, humans, really need to be conscious of at the present stage of our development. Thank you very much, once again, you offer an opportunity to consider things from a different angle and to start thinking in a different way!"
