A journey of resilience

As CEO of DiJONES, Dean Mackie has built a career that speaks as much of personal growth and fulfilment as it does achievement and success.

Dean Mackie

As the first in his family to attend university, Mr Mackie exemplifies the power of education in overcoming adversity and achieving personal and professional growth.

Raised in regional New South Wales, his early years were shaped by financial hardship following a family accident, which fuelled his determination to succeed. He attended over a dozen schools while growing up, developing the resilience and adaptability that later became key strengths in his career.

Excelling in sports, he represented NSW in rugby league before ultimately prioritising higher education. Achieving notable results in his HSC, Mr Mackie enrolled part-time in Macquarie’s Bachelor of Economics program, balancing studies alongside professional rugby commitments. He recalls how the university’s emphasis on critical thinking shaped his career trajectory.

"Macquarie encouraged me to move beyond rote learning – to challenge existing models and develop new frameworks for problem-solving,” he says. Lecturers combined intellectual rigour with practical insight, he adds, which left a lasting impression: “Economics wasn’t just academic; it was transformative.”

Mr Mackie’s early career journey included roles across chartered accounting, FMCG industries, and account management at Coca-Cola, each setting the stage for his entrepreneurial aspirations.

“It was crucial for me to understand the mechanics of sales and client relationships before branching out,” he explains. Particularly formative was his tenure at EFFEM Foods, where the company’s emphasis on unlocking individual potential inspired the values he incorporates into his leadership today.

Making the move into real estate after Coca-Cola, Mr Mackie collaborated with industry pioneer John McGrath, managing and ultimately growing one of McGrath’s flagship franchises. Over 12 years, he saw the smallest-performing franchise transform into the largest and most successful.

In 2019, Dean joined DiJONES Real Estate, where he assumed the role of CEO and later purchased the business in 2020. Under his leadership, DiJONES has embraced technological innovation through custom-built frameworks and artificial intelligence-driven strategies. This ethos reflects his ultimate vision: creating meaningful change within industries by empowering people through leadership.

While Mr Mackie has earned a number of business accolades throughout his career, he notes that despite his commitment to his work, he credits his Macquarie education for building his values around mental health and balance.

“I’ve made mistakes chasing external success that left me burnt out,” he admits. Seeking professional support and recalibrating his priorities, he transitioned toward strategy and innovation, allowing him to focus on impactful change within the real estate sector.

Dean Mackie’s story is a reminder of the power of incremental growth, continuous learning, and the courage to reassess direction at life’s turning points. “I want my leadership to reflect authenticity, inspire others and leave the world a little better than how I found it,” he concludes.

Unpacks six key lessons that shaped his success

Reflecting on his journey from the lecture halls of Macquarie University to the CEO’s office at DiJONES, proud Macquarie alumnus Dean Mackie unpacks the six most important lessons he has learned along the way (and they aren’t always found in a textbook):

  • View your degree as a thinking framework – university is about more than technical knowledge; it’s about learning how to think, challenge existing models, and remain curious.
  • Embrace the two-handed approach – like economics, life isn't an exact science. Be prepared to weigh different perspectives and understand that the most meaningful solutions often exist in the imperfect spaces. Be prepared to pivot, be curious and innovate.
  • The hustle is a tool, not a destination – a strong work ethic is a powerful asset; it helped me survive a challenging upbringing and succeed in professional sport and business. However, remember that achievement without fulfilment is exhausting.
  • Take the mask off early – I spent years chasing dreams to prove myself, often at the cost of my health and relationships. Finding the courage to be authentic and seek help when needed is not a sign of weakness; it’s the ultimate strategic advantage.
  • Never stop learning – whether it’s shifting your focus to psychology in your final year or deep-diving into AI and technology decades later, your ability to adapt and learn is your greatest competitive edge.
  • What got you here, won’t get you there – constantly challenge your own constructs and, above all, strive to stay in the moment.
