Turning point
Brian has enjoyed a career in the Asia–Pacific with stints around the globe, but says his undergraduate days at Macquarie University remain pivotal.

For some people, their time at Macquarie University is just as much about what is learned outside the lecture theatre as within it. For Brian Indradjaja, who graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce (2005) and now lives in Jakarta, Indonesia, it was all this and more.
‘Macquarie University was where friendships were formed, ideas were exchanged, and late-night cramming sessions turned into laughs and lifelong connections. I still remember the serenity of the campus grounds, especially around the lake, where I’d sit with friends between lectures.
‘There was something grounding about that balance between nature and study that helped shape my university experience,’ he reflects. ‘Looking back, it was a chapter filled with growth and discovery. Macquarie wasn’t just a university – it was a turning point in my life.’
Currently working for Deloitte South East Asia, Mr Indradjaja – who is dressed in a traditional batik shirt for a government meeting – says he never forgot the guidance he received from one of his lecturers in the accounting department either.
‘I remember looking up to Professor Lorne Cummings. He was generous with his advice during the latter years of my degree, and his excellent teaching knowledge, passion and encouragement deepened my interest in the subject, which gave me the confidence to explore real-world applications of what we were learning.’
Explaining that Macquarie offered a flexible and comprehensive curriculum, Mr Indradjaja says he was able to study both accounting and marketing, and apply his practical knowledge by working part-time for global marketing research organisation AC Nielsen (now Nielsen).
Overall, he says his degree gave him a strong foundation. ‘The University’s strong ties to industry leaders helped bridge the gap between study and the workplace. Access to internships, networking opportunities and experienced lecturers made the transition into the professional world much smoother.
‘One of the unique advantages Macquarie offered was its balance between theory and practical application. The curriculum was rigorous and up to date with industry trends, but what really stood out was the emphasis on critical thinking, communication and adaptability – skills that have proven invaluable throughout my career.’
Macquarie’s diverse student body and collaborative learning environment also played a role in shaping how Mr Indradjaja works today. ‘Being exposed to different perspectives early on taught me the importance of cultural intelligence and working effectively in diverse teams – something that is crucial in today’s global business landscape.’
In hindsight, however, Mr Indradjaja emphasises that what Macquarie gave him was much more than a degree. ‘It was a mindset,’ he says. ‘One that values curiosity, integrity and lifelong learning – and that has stayed with me ever since.’
A Northern Beaches boy who remembers driving to Macquarie in his dad’s car with P plates, Mr Indradjaja says Macquarie was always where he was headed for university given the strong reputation of the Business and Economics departments. ‘It was well regarded for delivering high-quality and practical education,’ he remembers.
‘The industry connections and career opportunities it presented were a massive appeal for me – there are many business leaders around the world who are Macquarie University alumni, and I am truly proud to be one also.’
After graduation, Mr Indradjaja worked in risk advisory and regulatory compliance for companies such as HSBC in Sydney before joining KPMG in their Risk Consulting Advisory business. He is now a Partner at Deloitte South East Asia, and President Director, Deloitte Indonesia Leader and Country Managing Partner.
Mr Indradjaja’s current focus is on creating value and driving progress for Deloitte. ‘I also have a parallel role as Deloitte’s Asia–Pacific Digital Regulations Leader, which harnesses my expertise in compliance and digital regulatory standards to elevate our services across the region.’
Having achieved success in professional services and industries such as financial services, he reflects: ‘I’ve been blessed with terrific opportunities throughout my career, have worked hard, and am very grateful for all the support I’ve received along the way and the lessons learned from mentors and leaders.’
Mr Indradjaja is a firm believer in staying coachable at all stages of your career – and in helping the next generation of leaders. Having recently mentored Macquarie University students on internships in Jakarta, he says: ‘Sometimes I feel I learn as much from them as they do from me.
‘It’s very rewarding to help them find their feet and share what it’s like to work here. One thing I try to tell students and young alumni is that the Jakarta business scene is changing quickly, so the network you build here – especially through university connections – is incredibly valuable.’
Noting the Macquarie alumni community in Jakarta is very active, he adds: ‘It’s great to see familiar faces and some new ones at the networking events and panels. Being involved provides another layer of connection – both professionally and personally. Whether you’re just arriving or are already established, there’s always someone to learn from or support.’
Mr Indradjaja’s involvement speaks of a full professional life that aligns with his values.
‘It’s more than just networking; it’s about sharing experiences, encouraging each other, and raising the profile of Macquarie University in Indonesia. Staying engaged, mentoring, even just catching up at events – it’s all part of giving back. If I can help someone else take the next step, and fly the flag (or t-shirt) for Macquarie, that’s a privilege.’
