Investing in the future
Virginia Malley's time at Macquarie University was a stepping stone to a meaningful career balancing societal development with high-value assets.
Initially drawn to Macquarie for its reputation in mass communications, Ms Malley’s career trajectory was not always clear. “I originally enrolled in architecture but shifted to an arts degree because it opened doors I hadn’t even imagined,” she explains.
She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Macquarie in 1987, a degree she describes as a fundamental foundation for her career. “It taught me how to think critically and communicate effectively,” she shares. “It offered me the flexibility to explore a variety of areas, such as English, history, politics, Russian literature, and French cinema. These disciplines gave me a broad understanding of cultural and societal systems, equipping me with the skills to navigate complex environments.”
She later pursued a Master of Applied Finance in 1990, enabling her to consolidate her understanding of financial systems during the early stages of their liberalisation in Australia.
Ms Malley’s career took off as a business information reporter at Dun and Bradstreet before joining Macquarie Bank as a credit analyst. “Risk management was emerging as a formal discipline, and I knew instinctively it was the next big wave to ride,” she reflects. Seizing the opportunity, she deepened her expertise in risk management through in-house courses and her Macquarie studies.

Her career has spanned roles such as Chief Risk Officer at Macquarie Funds Management, overseeing portfolios valued at $85 billion, and current positions as a Non-Executive Director with organisations including iCare NSW and Macquarie Investment Management Australia Ltd. In addition, she serves as the chair of multiple compliance committees and industry panels, contributing to best practices in sustainability and governance.
Reflecting on her career, Ms Malley draws inspiration from economist and Nobel laureate Robert Shiller, who noted that “finance at its best does not merely manage risk – it acts as a steward of society's assets and an advocate of its deepest goals.” This ethos has guided her impressive career path, which has taken her through public service, finance, law, corporate governance, and sustainability. “I see my legacy as protecting what matters most to people," notes Ms Malley.
Apart from her professional achievements, Ms Malley highlights the importance of lifelong learning. She completed 17 years of part-time study while balancing full-time roles. This dedication underscores her belief in education as transformative: “It’s not always easy to know your long-term goals when choosing your degree, but my arts studies gave me the tools to successfully adapt to significant career transitions.”
Her commitment to blending finance and sustainability has also guided her collaborations with ethical fund managers, the Clean Energy Regulator, and the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust. “It’s about reducing harm, reducing threats – whether managing funds to safeguard people’s superannuation investments or addressing climate change risks to our communities.”
Ms Malley credits her dynamic career motivation to her family’s long tradition of professional achievement. She recalls stories of her great-grandmother, one of the first female justices of the peace in New South Wales, and her mother’s career at the State Library. “I come from a legacy of women who worked while raising families. For me, having a fulfilling career is as natural as it is essential,” she says.
Despite her busy schedule, she emphasises the importance of balance, particularly as a grandmother and advocate for sustainability. She remains optimistic about the future, viewing her journey as one of constant learning and evolution.
Ms Malley embodies the transformative potential of an arts degree, combining intellectual curiosity with a passion for meaningful societal and environmental impact. Macquarie University celebrates her ongoing contributions across financial, environmental, and governance sectors as inspiring examples for its community to build upon.
