About SSC

Welcome to the The Department of Security Studies and Criminology (SSC) at Macquarie University, Australia.

The Department of Security Studies and Criminology (SSC) is one of Australia's leading academic centres of teaching and research in applied security studies and criminology. Our research and teaching focusses on finding solutions to real world security challenges, including:

  • Security and Defence Studies
  • Cyber Security
  • Intelligence
  • Counter Terrorism and Resilience
  • Criminology
  • Policing

Strong industry and government connections

Students benefit from the department's strong connections with industry and government partners, including the Department of Defence, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and the NSW Police Force. They are exposed to first-hand experience through our PACE program and our Internship unit at the Master's level.

Innovative, applied research in security studies and criminology

Our researchers work on research projects delivering a major impact on policy and societies. This includes analysing the strategic trends in the Indo-Pacific and its implications for Australia, finding new ways to counter terrorism and violent extremism, exploring how to better understand and manage the multitude of cyber security threats and challenges, adjusting government and corporate intelligence to a rapidly changing environment, and dealing with organised crime and cryptomarkets. Our research is enhanced by a range of national and international cooperation partners.

SSC is a proud associate partner with the Erasmus-funded International Masters in Security, Intelligence and Strategic Studies (Glasgow, Dublin, Prague).
