Born and raised in Florence, Gianluca completed his secondary education in Australia after moving here in 1981. He gained a first class BA Honours degree and an MA Honours by research at the University of Wollongong, where he worked until 2002. His main interests lie with the Italian Renaissance and the 13th-15th century Novellistica (short stories). He has also worked as a Research Assistant on an Australian Research Council funded project on Italian Novels Database from 1800 to today. Most recently he has developed an interest for computer-assisted language teaching and is developing the WebCT component for Introductory Italian.

He is the Vice President of the Tuscan Association NSW Inc. and is involved in several cultural activities, including photographic exhibitions (Historical Tuscan Gardens - 1995; Viareggio's Carnevale 1996).
