About the USER Group

University Students for Egyptological Research (USER) is a group co-ordinated by and for students studying and researching Egyptology at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia.

USER participants are doctoral, masters, honours and undergraduate students majoring in Egyptology in the Department of Ancient History, Faculty of Arts at Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia. Our focus of study encompasses archaeology, history, art and language in all phases of the Egyptian history from pre-dynastic times to the Coptic era.

USER (pronounced like the ancient Egyptian word WSR "to be strong/strength") was initiated by students in 1992 and has met regularly since then.  The group has always produced a newsletter: first The Papyrus, then the USER Monthly, and now USER E-News.

Previous co-ordinators include Michael Birrell, Shireen Chidiac, Mary Demovic, Peter May and Joyce Swinton; Tod Gillen and Ezzat Refaei; Amber Hood and Beverley Miles.  We acknowledge their enthusiasm in promoting a dynamic community around our varied interests and research in Egyptology.

The group meets regularly for discussions, presentations and workshops to further our skills for our study and research of all things Egyptological.  We actively encourage students at all levels (BA, MA, MRes and PhD candidature) to participate in our activities. If you wish to engage in the USER group activities please contact us on email .
