Many of our special collections are available to everyone online. For physical materials special storage and access conditions may be in place to ensure they are preserved for generations to come.

Our collections

The Library’s Thesis Collection contains print copies of Macquarie University research theses submitted prior to 2018.

The Macquarie University Digital Theses Collection contains digital versions of Macquarie University higher degree theses and includes:

  • higher degree theses from 2011
  • Master of Research theses from 2017.

Location: Print theses are located in the Automated Retrieval Collection (ARC).

Search: Records of all theses can be found in MultiSearch. Records of digital theses can also be found in Macquarie University Digital Theses Collection.

Access: Print theses are available for in-library use only. Place a request via MultiSearch for access. Digital theses can be accessed via Macquarie University Digital Theses Collection.

How to find a thesis and other FAQs

The Brunner Collection contains an extensive collection of nineteenth and early twentieth century texts on Egyptology. The collection was formed from the library of eminent Egyptologists Professor Hellmut Brunner and Professor Emma Brunner-Traut in the early 1990s. Since then, it has expanded through purchases from the Rundle Foundation for Egyptian Archaeology.

Location: The Brunner Room, Library Level 2.

Search: Records for all items in the collection be found in MultiSearch. A limited number of titles have been digitised and can be searched at the Brunner Digital Collection.

Access: The Brunner Collection is a restricted access collection and is not available for loan. Eligible users are limited to:

  • Academic staff from the Department of History and Archaeology at Macquarie University who have access to the collection during library opening hours
  • Current Macquarie higher degree research (HDR) or postgraduate students studying Egyptology who have access to the collection during library opening hours
  • other authorised users with a letter of authorisation from Macquarie University academic staff in Ancient History or Egyptology who may consult items in the Brunner Room under library supervision.

Eligible users must complete the Request access to the Brunner Collection form and receive approval from the Library prior to accessing the collection.

The Curriculum Collection contains a wide variety of classroom support materials and resources for lesson preparation and teaching. These resources are primarily for the use of students enrolled in teaching practicum units.

Location: Library Level 1. Curriculum materials purchased more than five years ago or not used within the last five years are located in the Automated Retrieval Collection (ARC).

Access: Items on Level 1 are available for browsing and borrowing. Older items in the ARC can be requested through MultiSearch.

The Macquarie University Library purchased the Palaeontology Collection in 1994. The core of the collection came from the library of the late Professor Jess Johnson (University of Oregon, Corvallis). It includes:

  • some rare monographs
  • Russian language material
  • a large collection of offprints
  • the personal papers of Professor Johnson.

Location: In the Automated Retrieval Collection (ARC).

Search: Records for all items in the collection can be found in MultiSearch.

Access: This is a restricted access collection and is not available for loan. Authorised users of the collection are:

  • Macquarie University academic staff, researchers and postgraduate students
  • palaeontologists listed in the Directory of Australasian Palaeontologists
  • Other visiting academics and research scholars who present a letter of authorisation from the Faculty of Science may also be granted access to the collection.

Eligible users can access materials by making a request in MultiSearch. Materials must be used in-library.

The rare book and closed access collections consist of items which are unique or rare, which require preservation or restrictions placed on their usage.

The rare book collection includes:

  • Australian imprints prior to 1900 and overseas imprints prior to 1800
  • limited editions of 500 copies or less. Editions of up to 1000 copies if fine printing is evident, or if they fall within areas targeted for acquisition
  • materials relating to Lachlan Macquarie and the period of his governorship (1810–21)
  • books of aesthetic importance, if their printing, binding or illustrations are particularly fine
  • first editions of Australian imprints of significance
  • autographed items or personal copies of a distinguished author or an exceptional person
  • facsimile editions if they meet at least one of the criteria above.

The closed access collection includes:

  • materials which are scarce or of bibliographic excellence which do not qualify for inclusion in the rare book collection
  • materials which are vulnerable because of format eg books containing loose plates
  • materials which are vulnerable because of content eg erotica, underground press publications and material deemed confidential when issued.

Access: Items in the ARC can be requested through MultiSearch. Materials are not for loan and must be used in the Library.

This collection captures the scholarly and administrative output of Macquarie University and provides a fascinating archive of the University’s history and research activity. It includes:

  • Macquarie University publications
  • books written or edited by Macquarie University authors
  • Macquarie University student newspapers.

Access: Items in the ARC can be requested through MultiSearch. Materials are not for loan and must be used in the Library. Some recent titles may be available in electronic format. Check for the Online Access option in the MultiSearch record.
