About the workshop

By the end of the workshop, learners will have a clear understanding of the skills and knowledge underpinning reading comprehension, an overview of the evidence base for reading comprehension instruction, and an understanding of how to use discussion and questioning to improve reading comprehension. This workshop will be useful for primary school teachers, special education teachers, speech language pathologists, and anyone working with children who have reading or language difficulties. Attendance at the related workshops “Teaching Vocabulary to Improve Reading Comprehension” and “Teaching Morphology for Reading, Spelling and Vocabulary” is recommended but not essential.

Session 1: Learners will access 2 hours of recorded content that they can watch in their own time. This content will cover the skills and knowledge underpinning reading comprehension, the evidence base on reading comprehension instruction, and the importance of scaffolded rich discussion for building comprehension skills.

Session 2: This live 2.5-hour session will teach learners how to plan for and manage rich discussion on written texts as well as how to build their students’ questioning and discussion skills, with the ultimate aim of improving their reading comprehension.

Session 3: This live 1-hour follow-up session is an opportunity to consolidate knowledge acquired in the course and to ask any remaining questions.
