About the workshop

The goal of this workshop is to equip learners with an understanding of the scientific evidence for anxiety in poor readers, how to identify if a child with poor reading might be experiencing anxiety, and what treatment options are available for such children. We will also discuss guidelines to help clinicians implement their own integrated reading and anxiety intervention to support children with these difficulties. This workshop will be useful for clinicians who need to make decisions about identifying and supporting children who struggle with both reading and emotional health; for example, psychologists, school counsellors, speech pathologists, ophthalmologists, occupational therapists, or medical practitioners. If you are an educator, please register for our educators version of this workshop here.

Session 1: Learners will access online contents in their own time. We will consider the scientific evidence for an association between poor reading and emotional problems, the cognitive profiles of poor readers with emotional problems, and the causal mechanisms that may link poor reading to anxiety.

Session 2: This live 2.5-hour session will focus on practicalities. It will provide guidance – based on recent research – on how to identify anxiety in children with poor reading in clinics and centres.
