Max Weidenbach on expedition in Egypt (1842-1845) and a life on three continents in Germany, Egypt and Australia

Max Weidenbach’s 440-page expedition diary, in German, was found in the South Australian Museum in April 2013. It is internationally significant for its information on the Royal Prussian expedition (1842-45) and its contribution to the early scientific exploration and documentation of ancient Egypt in the grand tradition that began with Napoleon’s campaign (1798-1801). When Weidenbach emigrated to Australia in 1849 at the age of 26, he brought this expedition diary with him.

This 2-day event is focussed on presenting research on this fascinating diary as well as the life of Max Weidenbach in Germany, in Egypt and finally in Australia.
