Macquarie University Art Gallery Public Lecture Series: “Explore the hierarchy of Chinese empire in encyclopaedias”

Date:
6 March 2019

Time:
1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Location
Macquarie University Art Gallery, Building E11A, Macquarie University

The term “empire” in English may remind us about rulers and their territories. In traditional Chinese culture, an empire or Di Guo (a nation of an emperor) means not only the political system of a nation, but also its nature resources, kinship and history, which are categorized meticulously in traditional Chinese encyclopaedias. The categorization shows how hundreds of years ago Chinese identified themselves and the empire. The lecture will introduce a few traditional Chinese encyclopaedias that reflect the hierarchical structure of Chinese empires.
