Aims and Objectives

The aim of the Lakeside Challenge is to provide a vibrant and fun major annual running event which promotes diversity, social inclusion, business and community engagement, sport, health and fitness at Macquarie University.

The Lakeside Challenge has the following objectives:

  • To promote diversity at Macquarie University
  • To create a traditional University event to raise awareness of health and fitness on campus
  • To promote our campus to potential students.
  • To promote sport at Macquarie University

The race is based on the historic Great Court Run held at Trinity College, Cambridge, UK and the goal was to find the fastest student on campus. While the Trinity course is approximately 370 metres long, ours at Macquarie is just 300 metres - and isn’t dependent on the chiming of a clock. Whoever is fastest, wins!

The origins of the event go as far back as 1990 when the event was called the "Macquarie Sprint". The event ran alongside E7B from the south-end to north-end and was run by the buildings and grounds committee. Due to health and safety regulations the sprint was moved to Macquarie Lake in 1993 and ran from the Lighthouse Theatre to the Lake. The race length was approximately 120m in length and was one race with as many students as possible entering!

The event returned in 2009 and was re-branded as the Courtyard Challenge with participants running around the Courtyard in individual or team races. In 2016, the event was moved to Lakeside Lawn due to construction work taking place with the event name changed.

In previous years, participants of the Lakeside Challenge have included school students from Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience (AIME) partner schools, Robert Menzies College, Dunmore Lang College and Macquarie University Village.

The event is recognised as a major Inter-college sports event and has now been opened up to other students and staff on campus. To read more about the history please click here.
