Support students with their transition to University

Macquarie University students from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds are offered a blend of academic and social support through the Refugee Transition Program.

The program assists students with their transition to tertiary education and empowers them to confidently navigate university life in Australia. It does this by connecting students with our Mentoring and Transition team who provide continuous engagement with students, ensuring they remain actively supported.

I’m more comfortable than before. When I first came here, I had a lost experience until I met the Refugee Transition Officer and the other people in the Refugee Transition Program.

Refugee transition support services

We provide a person-centred service to students, which includes support and the provision of information and referral to appropriate services at the University and outside based on individual needs, goals, and circumstances.

Our services include:

  • tailored orientation at the beginning of each university session
  • a drop-in centre where students can study and access computers and resources
  • regular meetings with the refugee transition staff
  • referral to other services on campus
  • Financial Needs Grants to assist with costs associated with university study
  • Tutoring and English language support.

Widening Participation University initiatives are funded by the Commonwealth Government’s Higher Education Participation and Partnerships Program (HEPPP).
