RESPECT@MQ Workshop Series

Macquarie University is committed to preventing and responding to sexual assault and sexual harassment across the University and its entities. This commitment is embedded within Macquarie's Respect. Now. Always (RNA) project. The University is dedicated to shaping a culture of safety and respect for all students, staff, and visitors.

Education is essential for improving the capacity of students and staff at Macquarie to better prevent and respond to sexual assault and sexual harassment. What is sexual assault? What is sexual harassment? How do they have an impact on the people and communities around us? How can we all do our part to stand up and take action in this area? These are important questions that we need to answer, so that we can collectively make a positive difference in preventing and responding to sexual assault and sexual harassment.

What is RESPECT@MQ?

The RESPECT@MQ workshop series provides opportunities for all Macquarie students to explore important topics such as respectful relationships, consent, sexual ethics, and how to take positive action in situations that involve sexual assault and/or sexual harassment.

The workshops are open to all Macquarie students who are interested in participating.

There are three (3) workshops. Students should complete all three (3) workshops in sequential order (i.e., Workshop 1 first, then Workshop 2, then Workshop 3) by the end of Session 1, 2018.

Each workshop has a maximum quota of 15 participants.

NOTE: Students must complete the Consent Matters: Boundaries, Respect, and Positive Intervention online course prior to attending their first workshop. To gain access to this online course, please download the Consent Matters Registration Guide and follow the instructions.

The workshops are described in detail below, with instructions on how to register.

What's this workshop about?

This workshop focuses on unpacking respectful relationships and how we define these in our lives. We will compare our own personal interpretations of respectful relationships against a broad framework of characteristics that research shows is conventionally associated with healthy interpersonal connections. This workshop also aims to help us all unpack the complex and highly subjective concepts of (affirmative) consent and sexual ethics. We will do this through in-depth scenario analysis, ethical and moral discussions, and other interactive activities.
