Clinical training placements

Clinic training placement

Clinical placements give you the opportunity to apply your academic knowledge and enhance your practical skills. Embedded throughout the program are structured Australian and international clinical experiences that allow you to experience different health systems, cultures and clinical presentations.

Our Australian clinical learning environments include MQ Health, the Northern Sydney Local Health District (NSLHD) and the MindSpot Clinic. Your international experience is predominately within the Apollo Hospital in Hyderabad, India.

Apollo’s first Health City campus in Hyderabad offers an integrated healthcare model with 470 inpatient beds and extensive outpatient clinics, including Centres of Excellence for Heart Diseases, Cancer, Joint Diseases, Emergency, Renal Diseases, Neurosciences, Eye and Cosmetic Surgery. Underpinned by a significant focus on training and research aimed at preventing disease and improving patient outcomes. Apollo offers every patient high-quality care.

The MindSpot Clinic is Australia’s first free online and telephone mental health clinic and is located at Macquarie University campus.

The Clinic was started in 2012 by a team of national and international experts led by researchers from Macquarie University, as part of the Australian Government’s mental health reform package to improve access and expand mental health services in remote areas across Australia – with approximately 30 per cent of patients from a rural or remote area and 3 per cent of patients reporting that they are from an Indigenous background.

Through a secure and sophisticated state-of-the-art online clinical treatment platform, MindSpot has provided services for more than 50,000 Australians.

MQ Health

MQ Health is the first university-led integrated health campus in Australia. With a vision of becoming a world-class health sciences centre, MQ Health brings together clinical care, teaching and research to provide an integrated approach to holistic patient treatment, discovery and continuous learning.

We partner with our patients and their families in their healthcare journey. Our signature clinical programs and services coordinate patients’ needs from initial consultation at primary care and specialist clinics, imaging and allied health through to inpatient hospital treatment if required.

This approach is supported by a culture of caring, integrity, teamwork, ambition, innovation and engagement, which results not only in better quality of care overall, but ultimately improves the lives of our patients and the communities in which they live.

Northern Sydney Local Health District

With a vision to be ‘leaders in healthcare, partners in community wellbeing’, the Northern Sydney Local Health District (NSLHD) has an established reputation for providing exceptional clinical training to medical students. Clinical experiences within NSLHD provide students with the full range of clinical presentations, opportunities to interact with patients and healthcare teams in inpatient and outpatient settings, and exposure to a high-volume and varied case mix. Students will primarily have clinical experiences at the Royal North Shore Hospital.

The Royal North Shore Hospital

Founded as a cottage hospital in 1887, the Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH), after its latest major redevelopment which was completed in 2015, has 600 beds and employs 5000 staff. It is the referral hospital for northern Sydney and is also a major trauma centre, providing specialised services in the areas of severe burns, spinal cord injury, neonatal intensive care and interventional cardiology.

It is a major teaching hospital in Sydney, providing clinical training to medical students since 1948, and offers students a high-quality, safe and appropriately equipped environment to support their clinical learning in mental health, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics and emergency medicine.
