Important: You must have installed the phonetic font "Charis SIL" or tested this installation to determine if the phonetic characters installed properly.

The object of the vowel spectrogram assignment is to examine the formant structure of a set of vowel nuclei and to map these onto formant plots for the purpose of comparing two speakers’ vowel contrasts. Students are expected to demonstrate an understanding of the concepts of target and vowel space and demonstrate the ability to analyse spectrographic vowel data using established principles as discussed in lectures.

The speech resources linked to via this page provide sample materials for vowel spectrogram assignments. The resources on this page already have the vowel targets marked. Accompanying the assignment is a second set of spectrograms that don't have the targets marked.

It should be noted that these images are based on spectrograms created using the EMU speech analysis package. From 2009 different software will be used in workshops and the image surrounding the spectrograms will differ somewhat, but this doesn't significantly affect the actual spectrogram images.
