Reports: Conference and escort interpreting for Blacktown City Council (South Korea, 8-16 September 2017)
Sophia Ra is a graduate of the Master degree in Translation and Interpreting, currently working as a casual tutor in Translation and Interpreting. She was recently employed by the Blacktown City Council as the official interpreter for the council and business delegations’ visit to South Korea. The visit lasted nine days and required conference interpreting and escort interpreting duties for various Korean political figures as well as Australian political and business leaders. These included former NSW Premier Nathan Rees, Blacktown City Council Mayor Stephen Bali (now Blacktown MP), and the CEO of Sydney BlueSox, Mark Marino. Sophia was involved in various meetings and events, such as the Asia-Pacific Cities Summit, the IAEC Asia-Pacific Regional Network Meeting, council chamber visits, business meetings, sports complex visits, and a site visit to the Australian plaza construction. Sophia views the experience as not only beneficial to her own professional practice, but will also be able to use it to benefit her students: “I was able to bring lots of new ideas, experiences and useful materials for interpreting students from my visit to South Korea.”
In other news, Sophia also recently contributed a chapter to a new book, Redefining translation and interpretation in cultural evolution. Her chapter is titled ‘Intercultural communication challenge: The interpreter’s role in health care interpreting’.
