Macquarie Linguistics at AAAL 2019 and TESOL Convention 2019

Four scholars from Linguistics, Lynda Yates, Agi Bodis, Yen Hoang, and Thu Nguyen, represented Macquarie at a week of conferences in Atlanta, Georgia this March, the American Association for Applied Linguistics (AAAL) and the TESOL Convention. Ph.D. students, Agi and Yen, were supported by PGRF funding, and Thu by her TESOL 2019 International Student Award. They presented on aspects of their Ph.D. projects, which investigate different aspects of international students in Australian higher education:

-          Agnes Bodis: "That's something that frightens me": Media representation of international students and their English language proficiency in Australia.

-          Yen Hoang: English-as-an-additional-language doctoral students' challenges in writing for international scholarly publication

-          Thu Nguyen and Lynda Yates: Reconceptualising communication strategies in academic English as a lingua franca
