Department of International Studies HDR Day - 1 September 2017
HDR day is an annual gathering of the Department of International Studies higher degree research students. Each student presents either a synopsis of their project or a chapter from their thesis. All departmental staff and students are present to raise questions, foster discussion, and assess presenters' progress over the past year.
Dr Patricia Koromvokis has been awarded the Vice Chancellor's Commendation for her thesis on "The role of gender-marked information in second-language processing". Patricia summed up what this annual event means to our candidates in her speech given on the day:
Department of International Studies Prize Giving Ceremony - 9 May 2017
The Department of International Studies: Languages and Cultures celebrates our students' outstanding achievements for their language studies with an annual Prize Giving Ceremony.
There are 23 prizes awarded annually across the 10 language disciplines offered by the Department.
The event is attended by prize winners with friends and family, as well as individual donors, and representatives from various embassies and consulates in Canberra and Sydney who sponsor awards. We are grateful for their generosity and ongoing support.
2018 Summer School at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków

Report on academic freedom to be part of United Nations review
Department of International Studies Lecturer Kevin Carrico’s report on academic freedom issues in Hong Kong is to be submitted as evidence in the upcoming Universal Periodic Review process at the United Nations’ Human Rights Council, which assesses the rights situation in all member states. Croatian President opens exhibition at Macquarie
Macquarie University was very pleased to welcome President of Croatia, Her Excellency Ms Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic and her delegation to our campus on Monday 14 August. The President presented a guest lecture on Croatian cultural identity and language before opening a photographic exhibition 'Australian Experiences of the Croatian Past: Macquarie University's archaeological mission Bribirska glavica 2014-2017' at the Museum of Ancient Cultures.
