Dr Consuelo Martinez Reyes
Not the Time to Stay brings to light for the first time the marvellous work of Puerto Rican playwright Victor Fragoso. Eight plays, edited and translated by Consuelo Martínez-Reyes. 

En blanco short stories to be translated in April as Blank Canvases, transit from the personal to the collective, always through the trope of loss. A naked writing uncovers a chaotic yet intimate Puerto Rico.

Shakespeare as Jukebox Musical is the first book-length study of a growing performance phenomenon: musical adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays in which characters sing existing popular songs as one of their modes of communication.

Teaching and Learning Chinese in Schools: Case Studies in Quality Language Education

This book presents the principles of quality teaching in Chinese, as exemplified in case studies of primary and secondary school classrooms.

Department of International Studies HDR Day -  September 2017

HDR day is an annual gathering of the Department of International Studies higher degree research students. Each student presents either a synopsis of their project or a chapter from their thesis. All departmental staff and students are present to raise questions, foster discussion, and assess presenters' progress over the past year.

Dr Patricia Koromvokis has been awarded the Vice Chancellor's Commendation for her thesis on "The role of gender-marked information in second-language processing". Patricia summed up what this annual event means to our candidates in her speech given on the day:

Department of International Studies Prize Giving Ceremony - May 2017

The Department of International Studies: Languages and Cultures celebrates our students' outstanding achievements for their language studies with an annual Prize Giving Ceremony.

There are 23 prizes awarded annually across the 10 language disciplines offered by the Department.

The event is attended by prize winners with friends and family, as well as individual donors, and representatives from various embassies and consulates in Canberra and Sydney who sponsor awards. We are grateful for their generosity and ongoing support.

Professional Digital Competencies projects (PDC) - 2019

This initiative was supported by a 2018 University Teaching and Learning Strategic Priority Grant (SPG) to help our students apply for jobs and internships internationally. Students were assisted with video presentation skills in their target language to make them more competitive in the international job market. The initiative was so successful when first trialled in Session 2 2018 that academics will be invited to roll out this project in Session 2 2019.

2018 Summer School at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków

Croatian President opens exhibition at Macquarie - August 2017


Macquarie University was very pleased to welcome President of Croatia, Her Excellency Ms Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic and her delegation to our campus on Monday 14 August. The President presented a guest lecture on Croatian cultural identity and language before opening a photographic exhibition 'Australian Experiences of the Croatian Past: Macquarie University's archaeological mission Bribirska glavica 2014-2017' at the Museum of Ancient Cultures.
