Real-world finance. Applied.

Our programs are designed and delivered by finance professionals with substantial industry experience and strong academic qualifications. This ensures you’ll not only understand the relevant finance theories, but also have practical, applied knowledge that you can rely upon immediately in your workplace.

It’s essential that our students gain the knowledge and skills relevant to today’s financial environment. Our programs are structured to ensure you learn how finance works in the real world, not just in theory.

In addition to presenting and discussing the latest research, our faculty members share insights from their own careers and use a range of recent international and Australian case studies to highlight important concepts.

Student experience and networking

Candidates for the Master of Applied Finance and the Graduate Diploma of Applied Finance should have two or more years’ relevant professional work experience to ensure there is a consistent base level of understanding among each cohort for a meaningful, rigorous, and interactive learning environment in all classrooms across each of our teaching centres. We also offer alternative entry pathways for candidates of the same calibre.

Students learn from each other’s experiences as well as those of the teaching faculty. Sharing a classroom with other industry professionals provides excellent study networks and lifelong professional connections for students.

Our student support services ensure current students have the assistance they need throughout their study and are provided a range of experiences and opportunities, including invitations to events from Macquarie Applied Finance Centre and Macquarie University. We regularly promote professional opportunities and discussions among our students, alumni and partners.

Elena 'Ellie' Virtue

Many people feel ‘locked into’ a research career after completing their PhD, but I didn’t see it that way.

I started in R&D with Melbourne-based start-up Nexvet Biopharma which was developing antibody drugs for pets. As the company grew I was offered a corporate role in which I supported the legal and finance teams as we prepared to list on the Nasdaq. I saw the finance team as key decision makers of the business. I knew that if I wanted to be a senior executive, I needed to understand and speak the language of finance. I enrolled in the Master of Applied Finance course. Following Nexvet’s successful US$40m IPO, the company created a new role for me as director of Alliance Management where I managed projects across the company as well as with our external commercial partners. The skills and knowledge the Master of Applied Finance course have given me will be critical for obtaining the rewarding senior leadership roles that interest me. While challenging, the Master of Applied Finance course content has developed my ability to deal with new concepts and deliver added value for my clients.

Ellie Virtue  completed her Macquarie University Master of Applied Finance in 2017. She is currently consulting to technology start-ups.
