Lorne is a Professor of Accounting and is currently Associate Dean Research responsible for the strategic and operational direction of research within the Faculty. This includes promoting innovation and supporting research initiatives aligned to Faculty and University strategic priorities. He is responsible for facilitating current and emerging areas of core research strength, overseeing research centres and research networks and enabling internal research collaborations with overseas institutions. He is also responsible for ensuring research integrity and investigating research misconduct in the Faculty. He currently serves on the University’s Research and Research Training Committee, Research Management Committee, as well as Steering and Faculty level committees.
He recently served as Associate Dean – Higher Degree Research for eight years from 2010 to 2018, a period which saw a threefold increase in HDR enrolments and completions, and the development of the Master of Research. Other prior positions include Acting Head of the Department of Accounting and Finance, past Deputy Chair of the University’s Human Ethics Committee, and has been both postgraduate and undergraduate program Director for the Department.
Lorne has taught in International and Financial Accounting and undertakes research across a wide spectrum of the financial accounting field, including Sustainability Accounting and Reporting, International Financial Reporting Standards, Not-for-Profit accounting, and Accounting History. He has led a major competitive grant on developing training materials on energy efficiency for accountants, funded by the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage ($240,000), and was also been involved in grants on assessing the draft Australian Water Accounting Standard for the Australian Bureau of Meteorology ($28,000) and not-for-profit sector accountability ($7,000). He has supervised a number of PhD students to successful completion in the area of sustainability and international accounting.
Lorne has published in leading International and Australian academic and professional journals including Advances in Accounting, European Accounting Review, Financial Accountability and Management, Accounting, Auditing and Accountability Journal, The International Journal of Auditing, Accounting History, the Asian Review of Accounting and the Journal of Business Ethics. He is involved in the development and delivery of professional development programs for CPA Australia.
