Common FAQs

Why has the GEM Design System been implemented?

It was created to help guide digital collaboration tools. It is a collection of reusable components, guided by clear standards, that can be assembled together to build any number of applications.

Can I use GEM in my projects?

GEM Design system is open for anyone to use, but it is important to note that GEM is rolling out in sections across the website. Your project should fit within that rollout so that it doesn't look out of place. Let us know about your project through OneHelp and we can advise.

If I use GEM do I still need User Experience and User Interface designers?

Yes. Every project should have a UX designer and a UI designer, no matter how small, even if it is just to review the design. This practice will ensure that the interaction design and interface designs are consistent, and align with the new GEM.

Is the GEM being created with consideration for accessibility?

Yes. GEM complies to AA accessibility standards, as we want to make our website usable by as many people as possible. We have been through a formal accessibility review not just for people with disabilities but also to benefit groups on mobile devices and slow network connections.

How I get my Page/ Section GEMified?

With a site as large as ours, we are GEMifying the site in sections. We have a planned approach to the site, so why not raise a OneHelp ticket and we can advise when it fits into the priority list.

I've looked through the GEM Components and can't find a suitable design for my content.

We want to support as much individual content on the site as possible, and every component that we create we want to try to ensure that component gets reused. Raise a OneHelp ticket outlining what you need and we'll be happy to assess your requirement.

Is GEM SEO friendly?

Yes, check out our writing for the web in the Guidelines section and feel free to reach out to our SEO experts in the Digital Team.

I'd like a single column page but my area of the site has navigation and a central column for content.

We do support single and three column pages on the site. Single column pages are reserved for main, landing and campaign pages. If you do believe you need your content full-width, please contact us with your justification through OneHelp.

How do I access the GEM code?

You can download the code for GEM components from our BitBucket page.

I found a bug, what should I do?

Raise a OneHelp ticket, and to help resolve your issue, please provide as much of the following information as possible: What a browser are you using ? What happened ? What I expected to happen? What are the steps to reproduce the issue?

I've looked through the GEM Components and can't find a suitable design for my content.
