2011 Student Contribution Amount - Postgraduate Courses
If you are a Commonwealth supported student you will be charged the 2011 student contribution amount for your 2011 unit enrolments according to the the subject area of the unit.
How do I calculate the student contribution amount for my units?
You will need the following
- credit point value for each unit - this is in the Course Handbook
- student contribution band for each unit - this is in the Postgraduate Student Contribution Band table
- Annual Load for the course - See Standard Annual Load (SAL) below for your postgraduate course.
1. Check the broad subject area and Band of your unit.
2. The date you commenced your course will determine the Band and student contribution amount that you will be charged in certain subject areas:

Course transfer - If you commenced a non-science course before 2009 and transfer to a science course you will be charged at the National Priority rate ($4,2355 pa) for mathematics, statistics and science units in your science course.
3. Look up your unit to confirm the Band that it is in. This may vary according to the year in which you commenced your degree.
4. Look up the amount you will be charged if you are studying for a Postgraduate degree

Calculate your student contribution - Standard Annual Load (SAL)
Postgraduate coursework degrees have differing values for the standard annual load (SAL). If you have a Commonwealth supported place in your degree you need to know the standard annual load applicable to the degree in order to calculate your student contribution. The majority of Masters degrees have a standard annual load (SAL) of 32 credit points and Postgraduate Diplomas and Postgraduate Certificates have a standard annual load (SAL) of 24 credit points. However, there are some courses that vary from these norms - see below

Faculty of Human Sciences. Sue has checked the student contribution band for this
unit, which is 4 credit points at Band 1 ($5,442 per year).
The full-time load for this course is
32 credit points (1 EFTSL). To calculate the student contribution amount divide the
credit point value of the unit (4) by the annual load for the year (32) and
multiply by the annual student contribution amount.

Upfront payments If Sue chooses to pay up-front and is eligible for
the 20% discount she will pay $544. Discount is calculated on the whole-dollar
amount for the unit. Hence the discounted amount payable is $680 x 80% =
$544.
If Sue makes a partial payment of $500 for this unit and is eligible for discount, $625 will be credited to her account (see discount table). The resulting balance of $55 ($680-$625) will be deferred to HECS-HELP.
2. 2010 student (commenced from 2010 onwards) - National Priority science unit - Master of Science in Palaeobiology (Standard Annual Load (SAL)=36)
Sarah is a new student in 2011 and has enrolled in BIOL905 in the Master of Science in Palaeobiology (SAL=36) in the Faculty of Science. Sarah has checked the student contribution band for this
unit, which is 3 credit points at National Priority
band ($4,355 per year).
The full-time load for this course is
36 credit points (1 EFTSL). To calculate the student contribution amount divide the
credit point value of the unit (3) by the annual load for the year (36) and
multiply by the annual student contribution amount.

Miriam commenced the Master of Biotechnology (SAL=32) in 2009 and has enrolled in STAT830 (Prelude in Bioinformatics) in 2011. Miriam has checked the student contribution band for this
unit, which is 4 credit points at National Priority
band ($4,355 per year) for pre-2010 students commencing a course in 2009.
The full-time load in the Master of Biotechnologyis 32 credit points. To calculate the student contribution amount divide the
credit point value of the unit (4) by the annual load for the year (32) and
multiply by the annual student contribution amount.

4. Pre-2009 student - Band 1 language unit- Postgraduate Diploma (Standard Annual Load (SAL)=24)
Lisa commenced a Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Anthropology in 2008 and has enrolled in LING903 (Languages and Cultures in Contact) in 2011. Lisa is a pre-2009 student and will be charged at Band 1 rate. The annual student contribution rate for this 4 credit point unit at Band 1 is $5,442
A full-time load in a Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Anthropology is
24 credit points (1 EFTSL). To calculate the student contribution amount divide the
credit point value of the unit (4) by the annual load for the year (24) and
multiply by the annual student contribution amount.

the 20% discount she will pay $725.60. Discount is calculated on
the whole-dollar amount for the unit. Hence the discounted amount payable is
$907 x 80% = $725.60.
If Lisa makes a partial payment of $500 for this unit and is eligible for discount, $625 will be credited to her account (see discount table). The resulting balance of $282 ($907-$625) will be deferred to HECS-HELP.
5. Pre-2008 student - Band 2 science unit - Masters (Standard Annual Load (SAL)=32)
Stephen commenced a Master of Wildlife Conservation degree in 2007 and has enrolled in BIOL887 (Biodiversity and Conservation) in 2011. Stephen is a pre-2008 student and therefore will be charged at Band 2 rate in 2011 for any mathematics, statistics or science units in which he enrols. The annual student contribution rate for this 4 credit point unit at Band 2 is $7,756.
A full-time load in a Master of Wildlife Conservation is
32 units (1 EFTSL). To calculate the student contribution amount divide the
credit point value of the unit (4) by the annual load for the year (32) and
multiply by the annual student contribution amount.
