Academic Adviser

Any full-time member of the teaching staff is able to act as an academic adviser for students, in order to give you help in deciding on your program of study and to advise you on other academic matters. Academic advisers can be consulted during the enrolment process at the beginning of each half-year; at other times you should ask within your Division of registration for an adviser.

Cashier's Office

The Cashier's office is located within the Student Enquiry Service on the ground floor of the Lincoln Student Services Building. This is where you buy your parking permit and sticker, pay library fines, fees etc

Dean of Students (for Undergraduate and Postgraduate Coursework Students)

The Dean of Students is available for consultation by students at all levels who need help and advice, especially on aspects of the system with which they are unable to find help elsewhere. Initially specific academic advice on programs of study and particular units should still be sought from academic advisers in the Divisions. The Dean of Students Office is on Level 2 of the Lincoln Student Services Building.

Learning Skills

The Learning Skills counsellor holds group seminars on many aspects of university study as well as providing advice on an individual basis. The Learning Skills counsellor is located on level 2 of the Lincoln Student Services Building and can be contacted through the University Counselling and Health Services reception area.

Lecture

A lecture is a large class where the students are formally addressed by a lecturer who specialises in the area in question. Students usually take notes in a lecture but do not take an active role unless invited to do so by the lecturer.

Lecturer

Any member of the academic staff who gives a lecture is likely to be referred to as a lecturer. There will be a lecturer in charge of the unit you are studying but you may have more than one lecturer during the course of the unit. Lecturers will have an office on campus and will usually have specific hours during which they will be available to consult with students.

Tutor

Any member of the academic staff who takes your tutorial is likely to be referred to as your tutor. Your tutor will discuss lecture material and you will be expected to contribute to these discussions by having done the required reading. Your tutor will most likely be the person to mark your assignments and be available to discuss any issues you have with the content of the work.

Tutorial

In a tutorial, a group of (usually) 12 to 20 students meet with a tutor to discuss a specific topic. The topic may relate to one of the lectures in the unit, and one or more of the students may be asked to give a presentation for the others to discuss.

Security Office

University security is available 24 hours a day for your personal safety and security on campus. The Security Office is located at the intersection of Macquarie Drive and Central Avenue (near the central car parks) There is a courtesy bus that operates in the evenings to provide safe transport for individuals around the campus to their cars, bus stops and student housing. Security can be contacted on (02) 9850 7112. A map of the courtesy bus route can be found on the web at http://www.bgo.mq.edu.au/security.htm

Student Enquiry Service

Staff in the Student Enquiry Service and the Postgraduate Studies Section, both on the ground floor of the Lincoln Building, are available to provide help and information for all students. This should be your first port of call for all enquiries regarding your study program. For example - Change of Program, Change of Address, Illness or Misadventure that affects your study.

Student Counsellor

The University Counselling and Health Service (UCHS) has a number of specially trained staff who act as student counsellors. They can help you to deal with problems, both personal and study-related, that you may encounter while you are at the University. The service is free of charge, but you do need to make an appointment to see a counsellor.
