6 Week Survival Guide
Week 1: 4th August - 10th August
- My MQ student portal (which includes your university email account): Log on regularly to look at messages and information from the university. If you have problems accessing your email just visit the friendly Student IT Help staff in Student Central C5C 244.
- Parking: If you drive to uni, buy a parking permit from the Registrar, located Level 1 Lincoln Building (near Student Enquiry Service).
- Public Transport: If you are eligible for a transport concession sticker, present your Enrolment and Registration Advice (ERA) to Student Central C5C 244 in weeks 1 and 2 of semester, or from the Student Enquiry Service, Level 1 Lincoln Building from week 3 onwards.
- Textbooks: Buy them now! Make sure to sign up for the $20 Co-op life membership, it'll give you 20% off all your textbooks!
- Readings: Start the readings for next week's tute. It's much easier reading a little now than all at the end of the semester
- Course Outlines: They are your lifeline to success in a unit at university. Keep them safe!
- Time Management: Create a semester schedule with dates for exams and assignments as well as a proposed weekly study schedule. Try not to commit to too much part time work as your study load will get much heavier in a few weeks. Pick up a free semester planner from the Co-op Bookshop or Student Central Building C5C 244.
- Lectures: Attend all your lectures. Most tutorials won't start until Week 2 but check with each lecturer. Take effective notes now so it will save time at the end of semester
- Need it Now Sessions: Run every Wednesday for the next 4 weeks. This week's session is 'IT and You'! Pick up information at Student Central, C5C 244.
- Sports: Check out the exercise programs at the Sports and Aquatic Centre
- Missed your Academic Orientation Day? Go to http://www.mq.edu.au/transition/ to find out what you missed, and how to catch up!
Week 2: 11th August - 17th August
- Social Stuff: Check out the U-Bar's chalkboard of social events at the bottom of the stairs in the U@MQ building, near the Chemist
- Tutorials: Be prepared to actively contribute to discussions and ask questions of your tutor. Remember, no question is a stupid question. Everyone else was probably wondering the same thing.
- Still feeling more confused than you think you should be? Visit the Transition Desk in Student Central C5C 244 or email transition@mq.edu.au with all your queries and concerns, and we'll sort you out! You can also sign up for a mentor here if you haven't already got one!
Week 3: 18th August - 24th August
- Study: An easy way to study is to form a study group with other students in your course
- Struggling to Stay Afloat? Need help? Speak to a counselor at Student Support Services, Level 2 Lincoln Building

Week 4: 25th August - 31st August
- Class Changes: This is the last chance to withdraw or change classes without Academic or Financial penalty from your first half year and full year units
- First Assignment: You should have received your first assignment questions by now. Spend some time in the library researching and taking notes for the assignment
- Essay Writing: First ask your tutor if they can help, then try the Writing Advisory Service or Writing Gateway http://www.writinggateway.mq.edu.au/
- Social Events: Check the website and U@MQ publications for important events and social gatherings
Week 5: 1st September - 7th September
- Readings: Keep up with them! Almost halfway through your first semester!
- Sleep: Make sure you get enough (but not too much!)
Week 6: 8th September - 14th September
- Assignments Due? Most assignments are due in the last week before the semester break. If you're lucky, your assignment will be due in the first week back after the break. Get them in on time!
GOOD LUCK
